The Infrastructure Decision
This is the infrastructure decision for prop stackers: where the copier runs — on a desktop or VPS you keep awake, or in the cloud after you connect via API. Native vs third-party is a different question. MimikTrader is not officially approved by any firm. No pass or payout guarantees. Confirm each firm’s rules and verify in sim.

- Tradovate VPS cost and when you still rent a box: Do you need a VPS for Tradovate copy trading
Compatibility only

The Short Version
If the left column still fits, keep the local tool (VPS only if the strategy needs it). If you already live on the right, a weekend sim bake-off is cheaper than another “was the box asleep?” morning.
| Stay desktop / VPS if… | Prefer a cloud API copier if… |
|---|---|
| Your edge is a local NT strategy that must run unattended | You copy across firms / logins without Windows awake 24/7 |
| One desktop session already sees every account | You mix Tradovate + NinjaTrader + ProjectX + Rithmic in one map |
| You are fine babysitting RDP, sleep, and Windows updates | Copy must keep running when the PC is off |
| The local copier already covers the whole book | You want live per-account daily/weekly limits, trailing drawdown, auto-flatten/lock |
| Zero third-party cloud vendor is a hard preference | You want to stop paying VPS rent just so a copier stays logged in |
What Desktop / VPS Copiers Are Good At
“Desktop” here means the copy process lives on a machine you control: a NinjaTrader add-on, a Windows agent, a local plugin, or that same agent on a rented VPS so it does not die when the laptop sleeps.
That class earns its keep when the leader strategy is local, one platform session already sees the whole book, you want the process on hardware you patch, or a hybrid is allowed. Desktop/VPS is the wrong default when the box exists only so the copier stays logged in while you trade discretionary or webhook entries. That is an infrastructure tax, not an edge.
- The leader strategy is local. Unattended NinjaTrader strategies, ATMs, or other glue that only exists inside a desktop session. A cloud copier cannot run your NT strategy — it copies fills (and, on some tools, webhook entries) after something else generates them.
- One platform session already sees the whole book. Same NT workspace, same Rithmic connection, same firm plugin. Scope is “what this machine can log into,” not every eval you bought this month.
- You want the process on hardware you patch. Some traders will not put OAuth or credentials on a vendor’s servers. A local agent (or a VPS you RDP) is the honest answer — with the honest ops cost.
- Hybrid is allowed. Run the strategy on a VPS; let a cloud copier handle followers. The VPS is then for the leader platform, not for copy hosting.

What Cloud Copiers Are Good At
A cloud API copier keeps broker connections (OAuth or credentials, tool-dependent) on the vendor’s side and runs an explicit leader → followers map. Your PC does not have to be the copy host.
Category traits (tool-dependent; verify in sim): multi-firm / multi-login maps under each TOS; cross-broker routing (Tradovate, NinjaTrader, ProjectX, Rithmic — re-check live lists); copy while the laptop is off if vendor uptime and sessions stay healthy; optional per-account daily/weekly limits, trailing drawdown, auto-flatten/lock; often a journal. No VPS bill for the copier itself.
What cloud does not do: replace firm risk, override TOS, run a local NT strategy, or make evals pass. You still depend on vendor uptime, healthy sessions, and your own sizing. “Compatible” is not “approved.”
Decision Tree
1. Does the leader strategy require NinjaTrader desktop (or another local agent) unattended? Yes → keep a desktop or VPS for the leader. Optionally attach a cloud copier for followers. No (discretionary clicks, web, or webhooks) → the copier does not need your Windows session. Cloud is in play.
2. Does one desktop session already see every account you intend to copy? Yes, and basic mirroring is enough → a local NT / desktop copier can be the whole answer. Revisit when a second firm login or routing path shows up. No (separate usernames, mixed Tradovate / Rithmic / ProjectX, multiple firms) → local scope ended. Cloud class.
3. Must copy keep running when the PC is closed? Yes, and you refuse a VPS → cloud. Yes, and you already pay for a VPS for other reasons → either architecture can work; do not pay twice for the same uptime. No (you are at the desk every session) → local is fine if step 2 still fits.
4. Do you want software to flatten/lock one follower while others keep trading? Yes → you need live per-account daily/weekly limits, trailing drawdown, auto-flatten/lock — typically the cloud/Pro lane, not a chart ATM on one VPS. Still does not replace firm drawdown or daily loss. No → copy-only is enough, desktop or cloud.
5. Confirm TOS, then sim. Firm rules on third-party tools and APIs first. Then a tiny-size sim session.
- Pattern D — Local strategy, one ecosystem. NT must stay up; accounts live where that desktop can see them. Desktop/VPS copier. Do not rent cloud features you will not use.
- Pattern E — Discretionary or webhook leader, multi-firm book. Cloud copier; skip the VPS unless something else needs it.
- Pattern F — Hybrid. Local/VPS leader engine + cloud followers. Common when NT is the execution seat and prop accounts sit on mixed routing.
- Tiny-size sim session checklist: Getting started
Desktop / VPS Failure Modes
If copy lives on the machine you control, followers go dark when that host does.
- The box is asleep, updating, or the RDP session died while the leader is still in a trade. If copy lives on that machine, followers go dark.
- VPS cost stacked on a copier subscription when the only job was “stay logged in.”
- One NT workspace cannot see the new firm login, so you invent a second desktop or a spreadsheet “manual sync.” The map changed.
- Local risk is a chart ATM, not per-follower isolation. One account trips; the copier keeps cloning into the next.
Cloud Failure Modes
Cloud moves the copy host off your PC. It does not remove session, vendor, or configuration risk.
- OAuth / credential expiry. Cloud is not “set and forget forever.” Re-auth before the session dies; notice rejects before the next entry.
- Vendor uptime is now your uptime. You traded Windows patching for a SaaS dependency. Have a flatten plan if the vendor is unreachable.
- Jumping cloud too early — paying for multi-broker maps while Pattern D still fits, or treating a risk suite as a firm-rule replacement.
- Skipping sim and learning about multiplier mistakes or follower rejects on a payout morning.
Fix for both
Match the host to the account map and the leader engine, then bake off in sim. No invented latency numbers — fill quality is broker, session, and reject dependent.
Where MimikTrader Fits (Facts Only)
MimikTrader is one cloud futures trade copier — not the only option, and not “official” anything. It does not replace a local NT strategy engine. Product truths as of 19 Aug 2026:
Starter vs Pro: outgrew desktop only for PC-off copy or cross-login / cross-broker maps? Starter may be enough. Need flatten/lock on one follower while others keep trading, or the journal / TradingView webhooks? Pro wedge — still no pass guarantees. Pattern D still fits? Keep the desktop copier.
Sim-first (any vendor): Does the leader strategy require a desktop/VPS, or only the copier? Can one local session see every account? Paying a VPS only so copy stays up? Per-account flatten/lock? Do I notice OAuth or RDP drops before the next entry? Firm TOS still green? Tiny size in sim first?
- Cloud futures trade copier; no VPS required
- Brokers today: Tradovate, NinjaTrader, ProjectX, Rithmic
- Tradovate connects via OAuth — Mimik never stores your Tradovate password
- Copy groups: exactly one leader; the leader is mirror-only (Mimik does not place, modify, or cancel on the leader)
- Starter — $29/mo: copy-only; up to 5 broker connections; unlimited accounts per connection; up to 5 copy groups; multiplier sizing; no risk suite; no journal
- Pro — $49.99/mo: unlimited connections/accounts; risk suite; journal/analytics; TradingView webhook strategies; about 25% off yearly
- Risk suite (Pro), FAQ/Plans wording: daily and weekly limits, trailing drawdown, auto-flatten and account locking, configured per account
- Trial: 7-day free trial, card required, cancel anytime
- Not a signal service; no eval-pass or payout guarantees
- MimikTrader does not claim any prop firm “officially approved” the product
Not official anything
MimikTrader is independent software. Firm names and routing are compatibility context only. It does not replace a local NT strategy engine, firm risk, or TOS.
FAQ
Is a desktop trade copier “worse” than a cloud one? No. Desktop/VPS is often better when the leader strategy is local or one machine already sees the whole book. Cloud wins on multi-firm / multi-login maps, or when the VPS existed only to keep a copier logged in.
Do I still need a VPS if I use a cloud copier? Not for the copier, if the vendor keeps its own broker connections. You might still want a VPS for an unattended NinjaTrader strategy.
Can a cloud copier run my NinjaTrader strategy? No. Cloud copy mirrors a leader (and, on Mimik Pro, can accept TradingView webhook strategies). It does not host your NT add-on. Keep NT (or a VPS) for that engine; optionally copy followers in the cloud.
What happens if my laptop sleeps on a desktop copier? If the copy process lives on that machine, followers stop updating until the session is back. Cloud moves that process off your PC — you still need healthy vendor sessions.
Does MimikTrader work with NinjaTrader and Rithmic? As of 19 Aug 2026, Mimik lists Tradovate, NinjaTrader, ProjectX, and Rithmic. Confirm the live connection list and your firm’s TOS.
Can MimikTrader guarantee I pass an eval or get a payout? No. It is not a signal service and makes no eval-pass or payout guarantees. It copies your trades and, on Pro, enforces limits you configure.
Is MimikTrader officially approved by my prop firm? No. MimikTrader is independent software. Firm names and routing are compatibility context only. Check your firm’s rules before you copy.
Starter or Pro if I am leaving a VPS copier? Starter ($29/mo) for copy across up to 5 connections and 5 copy groups. Pro ($49.99/mo) for unlimited connections/accounts, the risk suite, journal/analytics, or TradingView webhooks.

Soft Next Step
If Pattern D still fits, keep the desktop or VPS copier you already have and stop shopping. If you already hit multi-firm maps, “the box was asleep,” or per-account flatten/lock walls, stress-test MimikTrader’s 7-day free trial (card required, cancel anytime). Keep whatever wins the bake-off. Still sim-first. Still TOS-first.
